Mansfield – James William and Elizabeth Beatrice

By Betty Bird (31 August 2013)

My mother, Blanche Anderson died on 19th January 1939, at the age of 36 years,  after an appendixitus operation, which affected her heart, resulting in heart failure and death.  My step-father, Samuel Anderson, had two young children from his marriage to Blanche, Roxan and Samuel James, Jnr, and consequently  felt that he could not accept responsibility for my sister and myself, Dolly and Betty Baker, the children of my mother’s first marriage.  If it were not for our grandparents, James and Elizabeth Mansfield, my sister and myself would have found ourselves in an orphanage.  My grandparents were wonderful, they took us on and looked after us  until we had completed our schooling and were able to go further into education which enabled us to start working and contribute to the family purse.

We lived in Pallavaram, 11 miles from Madras the chief city of South India.  We finished our schooling at the Stanes’ Girls High School, Coonoor, in the hill district of South India.  Dolly (Lilian), went on to do secretarial training which enabled her to get a job, and I, a year or two later, went to Queen Mary’s College and did two years of a BA degree, but decided to quit and start earning, as  my old grandparents were finding it financially difficult.

One must remember, that my grandfather had retired from the Police Dept, and was on a pension, which had to cover all areas.  He had a lovely house which in later years became the family meeting place, regardless of who was alive and dead.  I have much reason to be grateful to my grandparents, who did not hesitate to take over their eldest daughter’s older children after she died.  They gave us a comfortable home and lots of  love.  We had a magic adolescence with the Second World War just being over, and lots of opportunities arising  with regard to job opportunities, social contact and, not least of all, the chance of meeting our future partners.

I feel that it is most important that  that my gratitude should be openly expressed.

They had a very large part to play in Pallavaram, which is the Village in India we are writing about.  Both were very sociable, having positions in the Church and Club,  the Pallavaram Recreation Club, and in other areas where their usefulness was invaluable.  They were  the very essence of the Village in India.  My grandfather died in 1953, and my grandmother in 1964.  My husband, Rex Bird, and I with our children, Kenneth, Andrea and Milton, left for Australia in February 1963, and were followed by a lot of relatives and friends, to have in our minds a Village in Australia.
